Elizabeth College
What it's like
Founded in 1563 by royal charter of Queen Elizabeth, it is one of the original HMC schools. The upper school lies on a hill overlooking the town and harbour of St Peter Port. The playing fields are on 2 sites of about 20 acres. A well-equipped establishment with plentiful modern resources including astroturf pitches, an art and technology centre, drama studio, sports hall and an outdoor swimming pool. A sound basic education is given and examination results are good. A number of sixth-form courses are run in co-operation with the Ladies' College, so increasing the number of options available. A good range of games, sports and activities is provided, and high standards in football, hockey and cricket. It is strong in music and drama. It has an active community service unit, a voluntary CCF and takes part in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
Pupils & entrance
Pupils: Total age range 2½-18; 825 day pupils (760 boys, 65 girls). Senior department 11-18, 600 boys. Entrance: Main entry ages 2½, 4, 7, 11 and 16. Own entrance exam; for sixth-form entry, at least 5 GCSE with grade C (usually highr in sixth-form subjects).

Curriculum
GCSE, AS and A-levels. 29 AS-level subjects, 24 A-level. Sixth form: Sixth formers take 3-5 subjects at AS-level (most take 4), 3-4 at A-level; general studies is not taken. Languages: French, German and Spanish offered at GCSE and A-level
The arts
Music: 40% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams can be taken. Some 7 musical groups including orchestra, band, chamber, jazz, choir. Drama and dance: Drama offered. Some pupils are involved in school productions and other productions. Art and design: On average, 25 take GCSE, 10 A-level. Design, pottery, textiles, photography also offered.
Sports & activities
Sport: Soccer, hockey, cricket, tennis, athletics, badminton, basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, rugby, sailing, shooting, squash, swimming and volleyball. Activities: CCF optional from age 14; community service in sixth form. Some 30 clubs, including debating, theatre studies, orienteering, photography, video, skiing.
School life
Uniform: School uniform worn; suits in sixth form. Houses and prefects: Competitive houses. Prefects, head boy, and deputy, appointed by Principal. Religion: Church of England. Christian worship compulsory. Social: Debates, joint theatre, ski trips, music occasions with local schools. Trips abroad include to London, Bath, the Cotswolds, France, Spain, Austria, Italy and Greece.
