Government plans to kill off A-levels in their present form have been given the thumbs down by Cambridge colleges. They believe that encouraging schools to abandon AS-levels would set back a decade's effort to make admissions fairer and admit more state school students. Meanwhile Oxford University has defended A-levels saying they are helpful in the admissions process.
