UK Sport (which distributes lottery funding to athletes) estimates that more than one in five (22%) of those receiving financial support have attended fee-paying schools, reports the Telegraph. In some of the UK's most successful sports - like rowing, modern pentathlon and sailing - those educated independently are expected to account for even more places. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics over one third of UK medal winners were educated at independent schools.
