Demise of languages in state schools
January 2010
A dramatic collapse in the number of teenagers studying French, German and Spanish in state comprehensives is reported in the Telegraph. CiLT, the National Centre for Languages, said that languages were increasingly the preserve of pupils from independent and selective state grammar schools. Languages are compulsory in more than eight out of 10 independent schools up to the age of 16. Many multinational companies demand proficiency in at least one foreign language.
