The Independent reports that a recent survey, commissioned by the HMC (Headmasters and Headmistresses Conference), shows an increasing number of its 250 elite member schools are opting for alternatives to GCSEs and A-levels.

Two-thirds are now offering the IGCSE (International GCSE) in at least some subjects, with maths, English and science being the most likely. About 80% of schools said they would be offering the IGCSE within the next three years.

In the sixth form, some 10% of schools offer the Cambridge Pre-U in favour of some A-levels and a growing number of others plan to do so in the next couple of years. Over 20% intend to offer the International Baccalaureate. Only one HMC school is offering the government's new Diploma.
