Independent schools have extended their lead over comprehensives, according to statistics produced by the Joint Council for Qualifications. More than half of GCSE exams taken by independent school pupils were awarded an A* or A, compared with 17% from comprehensives, reports the Guardian. Private schools improved their haul of top grades at almost three times the rate of comprehensives.
